Well that certainly ranks high on the cool factor! Can you bypass it and let the slush box do its job?

This slush box has a manual valve body that is controlled by solenoids that are told what to do by a TCM that is in turn egiven information by the ECM.

So, the short answer is no. It has to have electrical or electronic controls of some sort. There is a trick of some kind to get it to stay in first if you have the right computers all hooked up. It is a matter of just putting a switch in one of the wires. . . Probably could google "AW4 holding 1st gear" or something.

Should still be able to get both working at the same time with a switch.

Have to do some searching, would be nice not to need a second shifter and simply use a switch to hold it in first - not as cool but nice.

I guess that there are issues with the OBDII (97+) computers when you want to just have the switch. There are people out there that have done a HUGE amount of research on this though. . .happy Googling. . .

To keep the trans in first gear the controller shuts the power off to the computer and takes over the solenoids.

There are 3 solenoids in the trans 2 for shifting and one for the torque converter. Solenoid 1 on and 2 off is first gear. 1 on 2 on is second. 1 off 2 on is third, both off is overdrive. The third Solenoid is to lock the converter, it can be locked at any time. It works well to control hill descent.


The floor shifter controls the limit for the gear. Pull it into second and that's as high as it will go no matter the position of the solenoids. It also controls forward, neutral and reverse.
