CJ3 info for the ignorant...

Yes, I'm the ignorant one.

I found a '51 Willy's for sale here in Kennewick. Owner says it runs. Went to look at it, and it is mostly there but in pieces. Has a Studabaker V8, PTO winch in the back, and Warn overdrive unit, but I believe the axles and rest of the drivetrain is totally stock. The tub looks a little hacked up, but pretty solid.

Anybody know what it's worth? Weaknesses in the drivetrain?

Well. . .probably something like a Dana 25 closed knuckle front end and a Dana 41 or 44 course spline keyed rearend. . .3 speed manual tranny. Open c-channnel frame, 80" wheelbase.

All of these things are weaknesses. . .however. . .if the body is straight and doesn't have cancer, it is probably worth a few hundred bucks.

Strengths: The Spicer 18 (Dana 18) transfer case is a good unit and the Overdrive is worth several hundred on its own.

Is it a CJ3a or a CJ3B? The 3B is the fabled "High Hood" which some consider beautiful (the owners) and most consider butt ugly.

If I were to undertake such a project, I would keep the body and the transfer case and OD, throw on some axles from a CJ (1971.5 D44 offset rear and a narrow track D30 front), 5.38 gears, 32x11.50 tires, maybe a pinto motor or a modern 4 banger, simple cage, plate or replace the frame. . .upright winch and "restore" the rest to its OG coolness. . .

You may be able to fund the whole project by finding a collector to sell the motor too. . .

I can't remember when I looked at it before - is that tub already comp-cut? If it's not, I may be interested...
