Taking the Sahara. It's more of an adventure taking one with almost 115k miles on it as opposed to one that's still covered under full factory warranty. If something breaks it will make the trip more interesting. Ill try and keep y'all posted.

Running down the beach in 4-hi, after about 20 mins got a warning message "hot oil" and an extremely loud warning chime. We were 5 miles from the next road leading off the beach. I stopped and googled it and found it was a transmission warning. The JK-Owners thread I read was disappointing. It says that the transmission is likely shot. I let it sit for 30 mins to cool down and tried again. No drive, no reverse, no 2nd or 1st. Damn... Let it sit a few more mins and it finally went into gear. Nursed it back in 2-hi with rubicrawler in low range and drove all over town last night with no real issues. Hopefully it holds up this weekend and gets us home. Need to get ahold of that guy Cameron from Hermiston and find out who did the rebuild.

Getting an error message on my phone when trying to rotate image before posting...

I don't know anything about the JK autos but I doubt it's shot. 4 High in sand builds up a lot of heat, and it sounds like the computer shut things down.

You might strongly think about getting a trans temp sensor and gauge installed, as well as a secondary cooler. Then you can keep on eye on your temps and not need to worry about it as much. Also, if you're going to be driving in sand slower that 25 mph put it in 4-low and drive.

On a 80 degree day, pulling a long hill (Gravel) in 4HI at 45mph+ with my S10, it would sometimes cause ATF to puke out the filler tube. That equals a lot of white smoke coming off the exhaust manifold.

Did you have the A/C going when you got the alarm? Give your AFT a sniff and see if it smells burnt. If so, consider having it changed before you head home.

Good point. If it's burned, and you're going to change the fluid, at the very least I'd drop the pan and change the filter. That'l get a lot more of the bad fluid out.

I'm sure quadratec sells a trans cooler kit for your rig... Yup here ya go Even though a 100 stacked plate b&m cooler from summit racing will work better bits not original equipment from quadratec cool so go ahead and order that bad boy up immediately.

Here's what you should do.

1. Change the fluid DO NOT FALL FOR THE TRANS FLUSH SCAM!

2. Add a big cooler

3. Add a trans temp gauge

4. Stop running sand in high range

Already have a cooler. Seems fine this morning. Fluid is still red, doesn't smell burnt.

That's good news, sounds like the computer cut in at the right time then. Get a sensor and gauge so that you can know when it gets hot before everything shuts down. What kind of aux cooler do you have?

The kind that Cameron installed before I bought it. Mounted in front of the radiator like the one on the Rubicon. Yes, gauge and sensor is definitely in the works next week for sure.

I think you ought to look into Superchips Traildash... I saw one on CL a while back... They display all kinds of info, including temp guages, inclinometer and much more.

After careful consideration I have decided to "polish the turd"... Parts should be here by early next week. Install next weekend and ready for Rimrock the following weekend.
