JK Build Thread - Part Duex

Postby tobyw » Tue Mar 16, 2010 6:06 am

OK, since no one likes to read, I’ll just give you the quick and dirty version along with the all-important pictures  Bear in mind I am not done with the installation yet, as I’m still waiting on the Currie pitman arm to arrive… Once it does, I can button up the front end and take it for a test run 8)

Test drive: CZEK

Everything seems good, I still can't believe how well it rides/drives for a vehicle on 37" mud terrains

I see you welded those gussets to the cast parts of the axles near the ball joints. Are you using a special rod? I am trying to figure out the correct way to weld on that stuff.

Nope, nothing special for filler material. JK knuckles are made from a perfectly "weldable" metal, the name/series of which escapes me right now. A quick Google search will likely provide the specifics... I do believe, however, that the XJ D30 knuckles will require a high nickel rod and pre-heating, similar to welding to most center sections. That said, I doubt you are likely to have issues with your knuckles deforming, it's just not a common issue. The JK, however, is already notorious for having weak knuckles

I am asking because I need another attachment point for my steering conversion I am building.

I opted to drill/tap/bolt one onto the steering knuckle since nothing seems to stick when I tack-weld to it.

I built a quazzi high-steer setup for my YJ D30 a several years back, and did the drill/tap thing just to stay away from the welding issues. It was basically a copy of the M.O.R.E. system, but I used all TRE's instead of heim joints.
