Toyota noob questions

Alright guys bare with me on this one.

I am looking into what it would take to 4wd(solid axle) my Toyota (edit* its a 94 reg cab 2wd 5spd 22re).

the list of stuff I know I will need
Trans/Xcase
front drive shaft/rear
power steering IFS box (I would imagine non PS would suck with 33's+?)

After that is where my real questions lies...

Should I try and source a Toyota front and rear axle or try and find some other pass side drop axle? I like the simplicity of leaf springs in the front but haven't ever dealt with them only the jeep style 4 link. Is there any real upside for the extra fab required for the 4 link stuff considering that the truck will most likely be a daily/hunting/college rig? And should I source a stock Toyota 4wd trans/xcase? Or would say a tacoma one bolt up and be better?

The biggest tire I plan to run would be 37s (waaaay down the road) but I would probably stick to 33's at the moment.

Also I wouldn't mind trying to stay 5 lug since I have so many wheel options around the house at that point. Is that a smart move?

Oh and if anyone has any of these parts locally I would be interested!

I'm fairly certain that white trash can do this conversion in four coors lights or less.

from my.research the w56 trans with the gear driven xcase is better right?

I can do the swap in 4 ice teas or less certainly but I don't drink till the tools are laid down.

The 2x frame is a great platform to build off of beings it has the same exact high arch over the front axle area while the factory Idaho 4x frames are flat requiring too much lift in my opinion.

Your parts list is pretty complete but don't forget that you'll need a crossmember for the t case(s) too. And all new brakelines and master cylinder. Your current clutch will work fine with a 4x trans.

yeah trashy I have seen your Toyota sitting there for the last couple years. I wondered who owned that haha.
I knew about the brake lines but not the master cylinder.
once I sell my audi tonight I should have the money to do the swap. would 4.10s ( that the stock gearing usually correct?) work alright with 33s? I don't like not having any kind of power like in my jeep

My kids '91 Yota was 22RE, 5 spd, stock gears, 33's, and gutless in hi, and semi tolerable in low.

The big truck is in the garage so I can finally shoehorn the 1uz under the hood.

4.10s will be fine for now and yes that's the standard ratio. If you want power you are using the wrong engine. If you want good reliability and enough power to get the job done you're on the right track.

I'd highly recommend going with dual cases even if you don't think you'll need them once you have them you won't know how you went without them before...

Nice I love the 1UZ! a freind is putting it in his RX7 with ITBs and autronic.

I dont know about twins yet. I don't really ever do anything other than tow my quad to the dunes and go to hoover.

oh well my 22re is fairly powerful (balanced, blueprinted, cam, megasquirt) I was just meaning that I dont want my gas mileage to mega suck since I plan on driving this thing everywhere daily.

Would you be free this weekend sometime? I have work and school on weekdays.

Nice truck, anything done to the current suspension or just pushed fenders and bedsides?

suspension is stock minus the overloads and the addition of bj spacers in the front.

If you're just looking for 4wd to get into the mountains a few times a year, and you are concerned with DD fuel economy, why not leave the Toyota as-is and buy a $500 XJ to wheel? You'll be lightyears ahead in the long run... Just my $0.02 of course.

Toby why not have your cake and eat it too? With megasuirt gas mileage wont be too much of a worry, and considering I dont really like beating up my trucks and mostly do camping and mtbing and sand dunes the Toyota needs to be 4wd. I have thought about just trying to find a stock 4wd Toyota but I have so much time/money in this chassis that I would be moving most of my stuff to a different truck anyways.

plus this thing will be replacing my jeep.
