School me on brakes....

Postby Lud » Fri Jan 09, 2009 3:03 pm

My Jeeps has an intermittent squeak rubbing sound coming from the driver's side rear drum brake and now my parking brake doesn't work.

A little history, this is on the same side where I busted the rear axle shaft at Webber last year and ran a replacement axle shaft for a few weeks. I didn't seal it right because it leaked all over the drum brake shoes on that side at Liberty. When I got the new axle shaft, I sealed it much better and it stopped leaking diff fluid and I sprayed the heck out of the shoes and the drum with brake cleaner.

Now from what I hear I need to replace the shoes and maybe the drum on that side but I have no idea how this is done or the parts/tools I need.

Thought about getting this done professionally but last time I had drum brakes replaced on my YJ it was like 600 bucks.

So if you guys have any tips/advice for this let me know. How hard is this to do?

First off I would take it apart and look at them befor you go spending a bunch of money. You may just have a rock caught in it somewhere.
You can follow me.... but it's gonna hurt ;)

If you got grease all over the shoes, I'd replace the critters. Drums can be cleaned and turned if needs be. Tim's right on the noise. Could be something trapped in there...

$600 for a drum job on a yj? I'm in the wrong business.... Could have had a locked up disc braked 44 in there for that much...

If you get much more than a smudge of oil or grease on the shoes they need to be replaced. The oil eats the glue that bonds the pad material away and they live very short lives after that no matter how much brake cleaner you hose them with.

Well a little update. I've got the parking brake adjusted and it works great. I found out on a TJ they're supposed to be adjusted every 30000 miles. The Jeep just rolled over 45000 today so I guess it was overdue.

Took the brake drum off on the driver's side and sprayed the heck out of it with brake cleaner and wiped out the drum. The noise seems to have gone away although I couldn't find any rocks or anything in it.
