solid axle swap

ok so i am starting to think about collecting parts for a solid axle swap for the tacoma. its a 96 2.7l auto trans. i am running 33x 12.5's would like to run 5's thinking either a dana 44 or a 1st gen yota axle. i think i would go with leafs for a more simple swap. i can get a kit for 1350$ with everything except a 3rd gen steering box and the axle and gears for it and the rear.

any input opinions? i have wanted to do a sas since i got the truck. it would be my dd for at the most a year.

thanks

going with a kit will make everything like downtime and everything else a lot less of a headache but when you do it yourself you save big money and get little details that you want in there

so personaly for a dd i would do a kit but if i could weld better id do it myself and just build the crossmember before hand

If your gonna swap it to a striaght axle I would go with a yota. If ya want I can ask a coupld of the guys at work who are into them what it would take and if they have parts. Let me know.

if you could look around that would be great. i need a d44 out of a older wagoneer, not the vacuume axle. or a first gen yota axle. i need to be 61.5" wide. the yota axle i would need to run spacers, i kind of want to stick with Toyota but with the thought of running 35's locked up the 44 looks better.

i also need a 3rd gen Toyota pickup steering box. the tacoma comes with rack and pinion so that has to go.

i think i want to run 4.88's so i will need a rear set also.

would like to run hysteer to keep everything all tucked up nice. i think that the steering shaft out of a 98-00 or 01 tacoma will work with the ifs box, i need to look into that.

If you have done a google search on this topic, you know it has been discussed to death. Both axles will work well with a selectable locker up front. To keep costs down, you may want to keep searching the 4x4 boards for a used setup with a ARB or Electric locker.

have you guys seen ttora.com they have soooo much yota info. i know that i wont be able to buy everything at once, so i am trying to network and pool my resources and get as many eyes as i can looking for what i need. i can build all of the spring mounts and shock hoops and the frame plate to reinforce for the ifs box. as for lockers goes, i know it will be kind of dumb but they arent my first priority i would like to get it driveable w/ gears then look into lockers

both of those axles on those links are awsome...but they are going to want some serious cash for them. im going to have to sell body parts for builds that sweet, kinda lookin to keep the initial cost down.

ok so i have spent all damn morning reading. i have decided that the waggy d44 would be the best for me. i would be able to keep the same 6 on 5.5 lug pattern and its the right width. all of the yota axles that i have seen have been right side diff, and all of those guys have been switching cases. i dont want to mess with that crap.

so now where can i find a waggy axle

At the risk of sounding like I'm drumming up business for the kid, call Steve out at Pasco Auto Wrecking to see if he has one we haven't canabalized for one of our projects  And talk to these guys more on what parts to hang on it. Had to use Ford outers on Nick's to stay with the stock wheel pattern, but you don't have that to worry about. We're going 6 lug on the Scout, and Jose already is on his Heep. Keep us up on things...
