I will also add the MURS frequencies and some of the Race Radio frequencies for non club events. But they will be tuned down on power output as per FCC regulations.

Let me understand this correctly.
The club is going to lease/rent a race freq. to use during club events?
or use the MURS freq. (new to me had to look them up) for other events too?
Is this for the cleaner signal than CB and not having to deal with skip?

Just my observations:
2m is awesome for the clarity and quietness that it offers.

MURS are limited to 2 watts and will probably work as well as a CB (at least much quieter) but what is stopping anyone from using more power? I'm sure uncle charlie could careless if a few jeepers in the mountains are running 50 watts, I can guarantee they won't track you down. I'm going to also go out on a limb and say these aren't overly used and would be like having a private line most of the time.

As an outsider that runs with multi clubs/people, it would require an extra $200 investment to run with this club being most others run CBs.

The Boafeng uv5ra is what we have been looking at, a $30 investment:

Your expertise on the subject is greatly appreciated.

Just FYI for Club Members, Bobracing cannot see our original thread on the subject.

Remember, just because some of us may carry VHF radios doesn't mean we won't run CB also.

I plan on having both when money allows.

Prices have drop A LOT since the last time I bought a radio but a good radio is still $150+.

And after a little looking at reviews, it works and that is about it, if you can program it.
It's $30, you get what you pay for.

I still believe a radio as above will probably give you less performance than a standard CB with a good antenna and tune.
My reasoning, HTs are at a disadvantage with their small antennas to begin with and and being inside a metal can isn't going to help any. With an external antenna a HT should work good.

After doing a little more reading, again my radio knowledge is getting old, 2m radios were only allowed to transmit in the 2m band (144-148Mhz) even if the freq. they could receive were 136-174 MHZ, did this change in 2000 with the MURS introduction with the addition of these channels? Or do the radios need to be modified?

And again the radio spec. above will receive the FRS band but according to the FCC only FRS radio can transmit on FRS freq. (462-467ish), can the radio be modified to use these frequencies?
