regearing?
Hey guys I am looking at regearing my 2005 tj 4cyl to 4.56(or should I look at different gears? I am going 33s and I have 31s right now) from the 3.73s that are on there. I would love to do this myself but with school and work times I dont really have time any more.
What shop is fair on pricing for this job? I dont want to take it to some hack.

If you've already got 4.10's I wouldn't even consider spending the money to gear down to 4.88. $6-800 for a 8.4% gain... Just snag some smaller cheap street tires off of craigslist and leave the poor little diffs alone. 4.88's are weaker than 4.10's and you need all the strength you can get with that small stuff.

Nope guys I have the 2.4L 6spd with 3.73s
http://www.jeephorizons.com/tech/2005_tj_specs.html
It had the 27" street tires on it when I bought it, and I went to 31s and can feel the lose of power. The thing bogs alot when in much and hills.
Its this jeep btw.
Plus I might be driving this thing down to texas next month...

Unfortunately no, they're for the standard low pinion.

I don't think I've ever heard of people having problems with 4.88/4.56's in the diff. It's usually something else that breaks before the gears do.

well honestly if money was no option I would just get an expo 8.8 axle with 4.56 gears front and rear using the factory LSD and a lunch box front, but I dont really want to try and find an axle or even worse get one from a jy (never had good experiences with them)
All of my offroad stuff is basically exploring and camping. Not a fan of rocks or mud really as this is my daily.

I would go with 4.56's or 4.10's for 33"s. I recently put 31"s on the Grand Cherokee and went from 3.54's to 4.10's. It's geared a little lower than I thought it would be for dailing driving.
I've ran 4.88's with lockers and 35"s in the Comanche for over 10 years now with no problems. Have broke a couple front axles and axle joints in the D30 but no problems with the ring and pinion, and the D35 has held together without an issue. I've been waiting for the D35 to break so I can drop in one of those D60's that all the web wheelers say is a must, but it hasn't happened yet
. I must have one of the strongest D35's out there, or probably just been lucky.

Yup lucky... Remember Jose's 35?
I've seen a whole lot of 35's break it's just the nature of the beast. 7.56" of ring gear isn't a whole lot when it's in an exhaust pipe axle housing. 60's are severe overkill for the average PNW wheeler. A 44 is a good choice in probably 95% of applications.
My '35 broke last summer.
Running 33's: It held for about ~20 passes in the mud/dirt drags dumping the clutch in 4low 3rd gear, 6000 rpm. Did it once in 2nd gear, and it broke off the line. Snapped the shaft just past the splines, and rotated the outer tube in the pumpkin.
Dont know if it means much, but the Motive Gear 4.88's seem to be holding together better than the 3.73's that were in there when I bought the XJ. I raced it for one weekend with those gears and came up missing a few ring gear teeth. That was when I still had 31's

oops...that's right '05 was the first year with the new 6sp trans. I believe the 2.4L motor came out in '04. 3.73 makes sense.
Side note: That 2.4L is supposedly the same motor that was turbo charged for the Dodge Neon SRT. I've heard of people adding the turbo from a turbo'd PT cruiser or SRT Neon to that motor for the Wranglers for street use.... This guy has 37's and is getting 20-22mpg on the highway. More horses than the stock I-6. 220hp vs 190 and more torque 250ft lbs vs 235ft lbs and lighter.
