A last minute repair to Roman's Jeep (Jose for those of you that aren't internetelectuals) kept us up to 2AM Friday night/Saturday morning. By 8AM we were on the road and met up with toyman2 in Walla2 then on to the parking spot for the tow rigs. Not 100 yards down the paved road, I realized that something was wrong. . .turned out to be the wrong wheel studs that came with my front axle. We were able to get it going in pretty short order and get up the trail to camp. Camp was on top of 6 feet of snow at the T in the road at the top of Tiger Canyon. After we got camp set, we wheeled the deep, nasty spring snow. . .sidehills were the norm and certain spots were bottomless. We climbed hills, road the camel humps, got VERY sideways, played baja racer and bump to pass until 7:30PM when Jose lost 4wd AND low range. Needless to say, we had a very, very interesting FAST trip back to camp with Jose and I at opposite ends of a tow strap. We didn't bother with taking our time. It was 4th gear, wide open. Don has "in car" video footage of this. Back at camp, we had killer mac and cheese, home made dutch oven meatloaf and cornbread for dinner.
This morning, we woke to beautiful weather and spent some time in camp preparing chorizo, man quiche, bisquits and other morning delights. If some of you knew how we eat on these adventures, you'd never miss a run. Roman did a STELLAR job of keeping his YJ moving on the was down the hill in the deep snow after we broke camp and watched some of the local. . .uh. . .talent play, get stuck and extract themselves from a log pile. The ride home from the trailers was fast and uneventful. Jose is looking for a new transfer case as we speak and I found a couple of other tweeks. . but all in all, everything worked very well.
In a nutshell, a small group of well equipped rigs on a BEAUTIFUL spring weekend with good food and good times is the stuff of legends. All of the rigs were hooked up like Spiderman and everyone had a GREAT time. None of us wanted to come home. A special thanks to our guest host and trail guide toyman2. Cim, it was a pleasure as always.
Don, Roman and toyman2 will have pics and vids up shortly. The video footage is NOT to be missed.
