What's in the bag?

Postby OldGreen » Fri Jan 11, 2013 3:55 pm

What's in your rig? If we get enough responses, we'll make it a sticky. . .

I'll start:
This is what I bring along to go to the mall:

Quality first aid kit
2 shovels
12V High Volume Compressor
2 Jacks
Star Wrench
axle and driveline ujoints
3 spare axles (1 rear, one of each front)
Tarp
Various ratchet straps
1 Kinetic Rope
1 Tow Strap
2 Shackles
2 pairs of gloves
GPS
Phone
Discovery Pass
Misc. fasteners/wire/tape
Multimeter and circuit tester
Fuses/wiring stuff
Knife
Lighter
Fire extinguisher
and enough tools to completely disassemble an XJ and then put it back together.

Edit: Found more
2 flashlights, tire gauge, Starbucks cup, 800W inverter (in case I bring the waffle maker or magic bullet)
and the magic backpack. . .including TP, etc.
CB
12V power strip

Then, when I to the hills, I throw in food/water for the day plus at least one more day. Blankets, one sleeping bag, and all the clothes I might need. The number of times that I have used that sleeping bag is just amazing.

For any ne'rdowells that might get an idea to steal some stuff. . .every single one of us is armed and the rigs are lojacked. . .you choose.

Okay, we're a little crazy to have a Duramax for a daily driver. But if we go off our meds, we might wind up in a Prius.

BTT. Once we see more input in this thread, I think it would be good to get a group list started of items we could split up. I.e. for a group of 5 or 6 rigs are their items that just one of or limited quantity of could be split between the crew. I'm thinking, tire plug kit, impact wrench, etc. If comperabely equipt rigs were traveling together maybe share the load. If there were a few TJ D44s in a group one could carry a long shaft the other the short. If there is any interest and more posts in the vein of the initial post I'll split this off. (God forbid a Peak Putter thread get hijacked ;-) )

I'll try to remember all the junk I carry with me when out on a run.
What I carry varies due to whether or not I need the back seat or not. Usually it is not there.

I have 4 softsided bags that hold most of the stuff:

1.) Strap bag...Superyanker, two 30' tow straps, 6' tree saver.

2.) Recovery bag....3-4 shackles of various sizes, gloves, spare hook, snatch block, receiver shackle, Warn wired remote,

3.) Tool bag...Lots of stuff including: Currie EZ-deflator, end wrench roll up, large crescent, socket wrench set, extra SAE deep well sockets, extra Metric deep well sockets, small set combo deep well sockets, Torx bits, Allen bits, wire stripper, vice grips, screwdrivers, pliers, zip ties, elect tape, spare lug nuts, various nuts and bolts, u-joints, Torque wrench, socket extentions, one 36mm socket for front shaft nut, etc. etc.

4.) Smitty HD air compressor, extra valve cores,

Other Junk:

First aid kit,
fire extinguisher,
flashlights
Knives,
binoculars
CB
Shovel
Ax or Mattock
Chain saw on some runs
Chain saw fuel on some runs
Food
Water
cell phone
phone charger
more gloves
leatherman
cordless impact wrench..sometimes
lots of garbage bags
Lots of Skeeter Spray
Dust masks & bandanas
Sealed goggles
Maps
Stock tire jack
A couple of 2x6 pieces for a jack base
Discovery Pass

I have a small rubbermade bin with every kind of fluid in it that the Jeep uses, plus grease gun. This should really be carried with me, but not enough room and it stays at camp.
I usually bring a small floor jack with me also that stays at camp.

There is probably more I can't think of right now.

Stuff I wish I had: Spare front shafts!
2018 JLU Rubicon
Tow bar mount
Trailer hitch

All I take with me is my trusty YJ and enough go juice to get me back to camp. The little thing can't take all that extra weight....plus what Timmy says. Lee, on the other hand, NEEDS all that stuff.
